The archaeological ruins of San Martino a Poggio – Frascole

WHY VISIT IT
The Archaeological Site of Frascole, the only Etruscan area open to the public in the Mugello and Val di Sieve region, is set in a natural landscape of extraordinary beauty. Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by cypress and centuries-old oak trees, it overlooks the surrounding valleys, offering truly breathtaking views. During the summer months, it also hosts the cultural festival Estate Frascolana.

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS
Within the site, alongside the remains of the small church of San Martino dating back to the mid-13th century, visitors can admire the ruins of an imposing Etruscan building, dating from the late 4th to the early 3rd century BC, most likely a defensive structure. Scholars believe it may have been a fortified residence belonging to a prominent rural family, though it could also have served as a large temple.

Recent excavations have also brought to light even older structures, while additional rooms visible around the Etruscan walls suggest the presence of a much larger settlement—still waiting to be fully uncovered.
